Once you learn the LoveTypes soul mate system, you’ll see that it’s easy and fun to use. All you need to do is learn a few basic definitions to understand what your LoveType—your romantic style—is all about, and then learn the characteristics of the ideal LoveType you’re looking for.
Let’s start with the shyness dimension:
I. The Social Sensitivity (or Shyness) Dimension
Part of the questions on the LoveType quiz determine your level of shyness, either shy or not-shy. More than 50% of the population is classified as shy. Shyness, as Dr. Avila has reconceptualized it, is not necessarily a negative trait. There are positives to being shy, such as having sensitivity toward others, deep reflection, loyalty, and good listening ability. The difficult part of shyness is the selfconsciousness and fear of being hurt and criticized by others. Shy people, when they feel self-conscious about their faults and flaws, will withdraw and avoid social contact because they don’t want to feel rejected and humiliated.
Famous shy people include Bill Gates, Barbara Streisand, Don Rickles, Enrique Iglesias, Nicole Kidman, Queen Elizabeth, and many others. In fact, a good number of apparently outgoing and successful people are secretly shy, and you would never guess they were shy. Are you one of them?
Research shows that shy people often do better with shy mates—and non-shy individuals often do better with non-shy partners--because they share similar ways of looking at the world and interpreting social situations. Of course, there are varying levels of shyness, and a good blend or balance between partners is always desired. The exact shy/non-shy blend you’re comfortable with is something you’ll discover as you get to know your dates better.
For our purposes, we’ll define shy and non-shy traits, as follows:
Shy: You’re the type of person who has a strong distaste for critical, argumentative, and sarcastic people. You also share a deep desire for peacefulness, quietness, and harmony, as well as a reflective, deep-thinking nature. You’re sensitive to being judged, criticized, and rejected by people you consider important. You also have a tendency to feel self-conscious, as if people were looking at you and evaluating you.
Non-Shy: You tend to feel comfortable in social situations, without excessive self-consciousness, or the fear that others will judge, criticize, or reject you. You’re able to start conversations easily, express yourself, and make new friends.
Next, we’ll consider the 8 dimensions of personality, as measured by the LoveType quiz.
II. The 8 Dimensions of Personality
When you take the LoveType quiz, you receive four letters for your LoveType. These letters represent four of the eight possible dimensions of personality as measured by Jungian typology and the LoveType system. The dimensions are in pairs as follows.
Introvert or Extravert: I or E
Intuitive or Sensor: N or S
Thinker or Feeler: T or F
Perceiver or Judger: P or J
Here are what the 8 dimensions refer to:
Introvert (I): You tend to gather energy from your own thoughts, and prefer quiet dates at home or in relaxed, cosy environments. You also share a desire for a low-key social life with a few, longterm close friends, and enough time and space to process your thoughts before speaking.
Extravert (E): You tend to gather energy from being with other people. You enjoy having many friends and acquaintances, and you like nighttime outings, social events, and parties.
Intuitive (N):You’re the type of person who places less importance on the real or immediate. You prefer to deal with relationships through your "sixth sense," "gut feeling," or "hunch." You treasure the possibilities of a relationship, the way a relationship could or should be. You enjoy talking with your partner about philosophy, psychology, science, and ideas that can influence events and change the world.
Sensor (S): You tend to have a realistic grasp of life and relationships. You like to talk about down-to-earth things: current events, people, investments, travel, entertainment, politics, sports, and fashion. You’re also a sensualist: You enjoy the sights, smells, and sounds of love, but you can be quickly turned off by odors, noises, or other distractions.
Thinker (T): You value competence, a keen sense of humor, stimulating conversation, respect, and individuality in your mate. You are turned off by too much emotional or physical clutching, and especially by excessive sentimentality, "the touchy-feely stuff"; as you may call it.
Feeler (F): You enjoy expressions of affection in any form. You cherish backrubs, caresses, and verbal tokens of affection: "I love you" is always welcomed. At the same time, you loathe manipulative behavior, aggressiveness, and insensitivity from your mate.
Perceiver (P): You hate schedules and time pressures, especially in your love life. When it comes to romance, you crave the mystery and suspense of not knowing what will happen next, the possibility that anything can, and will, happen. You have a tremendous need for fun, excitement, and variety in your relationships. At the same time, you may have a terrible time making up your mind and committing to a partner. Because you value spontaneity and flexibility, you may delay commitment as long as possible.
Judger (J): You enjoy schedules in everything you do, including your love life. You like to plan ahead and arrange all the details of your romantic endeavors. You also attach a great value to commitment in relationships. From the moment you start going out with someone, you are already trying to determine where the relationship is heading: Are marriage and children the end result, or merely fun dating? You want to know what to expect as soon as possible.
III. THE FOUR LOVETEMPERAMENT GROUPS
Another way to look at the letter combinations from the LoveType quiz is to examine the two letter combinations that make up four distinct personality groups called the LoveTemperament Group. For example, you may have scored an INTP on the test. Based on the two middle letters, NT, you belong in the group called the NT (Knowledge Seekers), as described below. The 4 Love Temperament Groups are as follows:
NF: Intuitive Feelers-called the Meaning Seekers
NT: Intuitive Thinkers-called the Knowledge Seekers
SJ: Sensing Judgers-called the Security Seekers
SP: Sensing Perceivers-called the Excitement Seekers
Here are their characteristics:
NF--Intuitive Feelers: Meaning Seekers: You have a desire for finding the meaning in life; you have a strong interest in psychology, spirituality, science, the arts, and creating possibilities.
NT--Intuitive Thinkers: Knowledge Seekers: You value logic, stimulating debate, intelligence, competence, and continual growth in your relationships.
SP--Sensing Perceivers: Excitement Seekers: You value fun, excitement, adventure, and spontaneity in every aspect of your life, especially in your relationships.
SJ--Sensing Judgers: Security Seeker: You value tradition, loyalty, security, and structure in your relationships.
Finally, we get to the full description of your LoveType based on the four combined letters that make up your LoveType
III. The 16 LoveTypes: Who You Really Are
Finally, by combining the four letters of your LoveType (the personality dimensions described above), you get your full LoveType—one of 16 unique personality styles that has distinct values, ways of looking at the world, organizing their lives, making decisions, and interacting socially with the world.
For example, if you scored I-N-F-J on the LoveType quiz, you are Introverted, Intuitive, Feeling, and Judging. This LoveType is called the Mystic Writer, and has a special cartoon figure associated with it to help you remember it better.
Here is the Mystic Writer (INFJ):
